Veterinary Physiotherapy
How will physiotherapy help your pet?
The main benefits of Veterinary Physiotherapy:
Assist animals recovering from surgery or an injury
Help to manage any long term conditions e.g. osteoarthritis or hip/elbow dysplasia
Decrease pain and discomfort; improving your animals quality of life
Decrease weakness, inflammation and muscle tension
Decrease joint instability and risk of injury
Improve mental health
Improve balance, co-ordination, proprioception and stability
Improve core condition and muscle strength
Correct compensatory gait patterns
Maintain and or improve joint mobility
Enhance performance
Pain management
Physiotherapy can help with many conditions:
Conditions
Acute
Chronic
Arthritis, sprains, strains, back pain, and performance problems
Post-operative rehabilitation
Spinal and neurological problems can also benefit greatly from physiotherapy
Pain Control
Reducing the use of medications such as opioids and non-steroidal drugs
Post-surgery cases
Chronic arthritis
Soft tissue injuries
Abnormal gait patterns
Compensatory pain
Overuse injuries
Neurological injuries
Degenerative Conditions
Expanded options of treatment for degenerative conditions
Hip dysplasia
Elbow dysplasia
Arthritis
Post-operative Recovery
The incorporation of physiotherapy techniques into the day-to-day post-operative procedures for animals will improve outcomes in all surgical cases. This is especially true for orthopaedic and neurological cases; treatments applied according to the specific procedure and needs of each patient will reduce pain, lower the risk of complications, and facilitate a faster, fuller recovery.
Sporting and Competitive Animals
Physiotherapy is advantageous to sporting and competitive animals, providing support right through the competitive season and keeping them in tip-top condition. Physiotherapy enables the early detection of injuries, reduces the risk of injuries, and ensures a better return to sport and function post-injury, through tailored rehabilitation programs
What does a physiotherapy appointment involve?
Static and dynamic assessment:
A thorough assessment will be made including both static and dynamic observations, covering all aspects of your animals life and management.
Static assessment involves a visual assessment of your animals posture and conformation. Dynamic observations involve assessing the way your animal moves. This is then followed by a skeletal and soft tissue assessment. This will help to identify any movement abnormalities, weaknesses, asymmetries and areas of tension and soreness. The findings of these assessments along with the full veterinary history will be linked together to create a treatment plan that is tailored specifically to your animal.
For equine clients, I may also need to see your horses' saddle and bridle, as well as observe them being lunged and/or ridden.
Physiotherapy treatment:
Your animal will have an individual treatment plan specialised to their case. Therapies and techniques may include:
Massage therapy; including myofascial release.
LASER (photobiomodulation) therapy
Pulsed-electro Magnetic Field Therapy (Pulsed Mag / PMFT)
Therapeutic Ultrasound
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) therapy
NeuroMuscular ElectroStimulation (NMES)
Heat therapy and cold therapy
Passive stretches and baited stretches
Acupressure
Craniosacral techniques
Taping
Remedial Exercises; such as pole work, weight shifting, core exercises etc.
Static and dynamic assessment.
